The client’s choice for the two upper floors of an office building from the 80’s designed by the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha expressed the intentions of associating the new company to a solid, and also agile and modern workplace.
The project consisted in remodeling the whole space taking that as a principle and interpretating the program. The comparted rooms, due to the confidentiality of the issues, are demanded as well as the openspace area for the production activities.
The original and highly qualified architectural characteristics are the visible rib slab, the air conditioning distribution network and the electrical system through metallic technical ducts that are parallel to the main concrete beams. The architectural proposal avoided touching those elements and definied an auxiliary steel structure, apart from the original concrete structure, to support the partitions. The rooms dimensions are defined by this grid associated with the dry-wall partitions and ceiling and also with the sliding glass doors. This solution separates acoustically the rooms and maintains the desired transparence from the collective space. The access between the two floors (production department) and the penthouse (principals) is done through a steel stairway mounted in an original void, recovered from the original project. The stairway and the bookshelf for the library are assembled together through this double height ceiling.
The offices at the penthouse follows the same concept dealing with the auxiliary steel structure, that, in this floor, is anchored to the rib concrete slab which was restored. This structure defines the principals’ offices and the meeting rooms, all closed by wood or glass panels, depending on the grade of transparency or privacy desired for each activity.
The new pavement for the terrace consists in a kind of access floor, assembled with stone slabs, aiming to protect and shadow existing waterproofing system. Through some gardening elements, the Westsided rooms are sun shaded by dense vegetation and some delicate plants keep the overview to the Ibirapuera Park on the other direction.
